Biography

Born in 1989 in Cayenne, French Guiana, Ludovic Marimoutou is a self-taught painter based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. His painting explores the relationships between people, territories and memories, through a language where figures, motifs and spontaneous gestures meet.
Drawn to art from childhood, he created his first paintings during a stay in New Zealand in 2012. His encounter with a painter enriched his approach to color, portraiture, and landscape. This experience marked the beginning of a practice he has developed freely, without adhering to any particular artistic movement.
His journey then took him from French Guiana to Réunion, then to Cameroon, before he settled in Abidjan. The landscapes, encounters, and cultures nourished his vision. French Guiana remains a vital anchor: its vegetation, its cultural diversity, and certain motifs of Tembé art resonate in his compositions.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Ludovic Marimoutou explores the contrasts, textures, and rhythms of color. Faces, gazes, organic forms, and networks of lines compose a universe that oscillates between figuration and abstraction. Some works favor precise construction and repeated motifs; others give more space to gesture, drips, and the texture of the paint.
His professional background, from human resources to teaching, reflects her interest in people and the transmission of knowledge. This focus extends to her artistic approach: creating the conditions for encounter and allowing each individual to develop their own perspective.
Since his first exhibition in French Guiana in 2021, he has presented his work in Réunion and Cameroon. He is currently continuing his artistic research in Abidjan.
Artistic approach
"Painting what flows through us and connects us."
My painting originates from the attention paid to what connects: a being to its environment, a memory to a form, a color to an emotion.
I work primarily with acrylics, using layers, rhythms, and marks. Depending on the piece, I construct patterns, organize lines, or allow the gesture to open up an unexpected direction. I explore the encounter between a controlled form and what the material brings forth during the creative process.
Faces, gazes, and the forms of living things reappear in my compositions. They coexist with geometric fragments, interlacing patterns, and movements of color. These elements constitute a vocabulary that I transform from one canvas to another, without seeking to give it a single meaning.
My Guyanese roots and the territories I have traversed nourish this research. Landscapes, encounters, and lived experiences become starting points, which painting shifts and reinvents.
I don't seek to impose an interpretation. I like a work of art to capture attention, to raise a question, to awaken a memory, or to evoke a feeling that is difficult to name. This dialogue with the viewer gives each painting a life that transcends the moment of its creation.
